What is the MSPE?
The Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) is a standardized summary of your academic performance, professional attributes, and experiences during medical school. It provides residency programs with an objective evaluation based on verified information and summative assessments. The MSPE is an evaluation document, not a letter of recommendation.
What Are Noteworthy Characteristics?
Noteworthy Characteristics highlight up to three experiences, accomplishments, or personal qualities that distinguish you as a residency applicant. These statements help residency programs better understand your unique background, leadership, service, research, and personal achievements.
Writing Guidelines
When preparing your Noteworthy Characteristics:
- Include no more than three characteristics.
- Write each characteristic in two sentences or fewer (approximately 60–80 words).
- Focus on your most meaningful accomplishments, experiences, or qualities.
- You may include significant challenges or hardships that contributed to your personal or professional growth.
- Avoid lengthy biographies or repeating information already included in your ERAS application, personal statement, or letters of recommendation.
Preparing Your Noteworthy Characteristics
Review your CV and identify the experiences that best represent your strengths and professional identity. Common themes include:
- Health advocacy and addressing health disparities
- Community service
- Research and scholarly activities
- Leadership experiences
- Teaching, mentoring, and tutoring
- Meaningful life experiences and personal growth
Example Themes

- A significant leadership role or organizational impact
